Like the previous commenter, I too have followed your career and worried about you when you left MSNBC. I am glad to see you have set a path to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Know that many of your readers/listeners, while they may not be your "close friends," are rooting for you to find happiness and success and love.
I have also been listening since 1A started. You have helped me learn so much. Your approach to communication is rare. Thank you for sharing the cost of your excellence. As a mentor for several Purdue University students and recent grads, I plan to share your message.
I’ve been listening to you since the first day at 1A. I’m sorry that you felt the way you did. I’m sure a lot of people want to know someone famous. Just be you!! I hope you’re feeling better and take those trips!! I’ll be 73 in February. Enjoy yourself and revel in your life, your love and your friends!! You’ll find true ones!! Keep up the great work
In thinking about why I was so happy to read this, I realized I had been too elliptical in my comment to be useful. You have a gift for making a substantive connection with your listeners, because your approach of taking the risk to make sure that those of different political perspectives know they are being heard, even if full understanding or agreement are not in the cards.
The immediacy of the live stream has been a special joy for me, for reasons of my own story and losses. However, it has felt a little less Joshua than I wanted. I have jogged your elbow a bit in e-mails on a couple of topics, because I really wanted some of the risk taking I valued so much in your 1A work to come back. Friday's live stream was a lot of fun as for as the topic was concerned; as I said in chat, a little format tinkering would have suited me better, but until you try, you don't know. I did find the discussion of the FLA/CA debate unsettling though. I want your opinions and reactions, but listening to your comparison of the states, it sounded to me like you were not saying the thing that mattered to you, even though you were saying a lot.
After the stream ended, I thought back over your words when your grandmother died, but couldn't dredge up any reason from that period to create the disconnect. I heard you when you said in the live stream that leaving CA was like leaving home, but I didn't hear all of what that comment meant until I read this Substack. It makes so much more sense with this exploration in place. I am greatly relieved to understand. I could yammer on at length - but that would be worse than the too elliptical first response I made. I stand by it, however.
All the best ... all the shining ... all the future hopes and dreams.
Joshua thank you for sharing this with us. I have much better insights now into your path and life experiences. I think you might find that fans can also be friends with realistic expectations. 🌹
I've loved your work. I listened to you on 1a. Much of what people post on social media is the good stuff in their lives. Don't use it as a measure of yourself. You are opening yourself up to the raw parts. Keep up the good work. I will continue to listen.

Thank God Almighty! Let's do this.
