Another interesting show! Always makes me think. And to over simplify, perfection is the bane of us all. I'm so glad I never reached for that particular pill.
It was definitely not the Man Hatin’ Project I’d been led to expect by both the right and the left. I think my biggest takeaway is that Barbie always knew her purpose was in her breezy, aspirational, performative feminism. It was only when she discovered it’s failure that she had an existential crisis. Barbie represents the pinnacle, but not the journey. We see her as President and Nobel Prize Winner and Doctor, but we never see her as Behind in the Polls Candidate or Can’t Get Funding Scientist or Exhausted Med Student.
I’m not too worried about Ken either. He may be dumb as a sack of hammers, but his riz was strong enough to take over Barbieland in a blink. Also, can we talk about Allan for a second? The wink and nod from Greta and Noah was that Allan, in his rainbow striped shirt, is Ken’s “buddy,” and he pretty clearly has a crush on Beach Ken. But Ken didn’t appear to actually have any friends. You talked at the end of the episode about toxic masculinity, but doesn’t turning Ken and Allan into slashfic reinforce that? How does popular culture strike a balance between queer representation (which is absolutely important, don’t misread me on that) and portraying healthy male platonic relationships? That may be fodder for another episode...
Once Barbie got a look at the real world, I am glad that she learned a lesson and went forward to implement change in Barbieland. Yes, she had to nip the Kenland thing in the bud to do this, but ultimately, I think she ultimately realized that the right way to run things is to include everyone. This was BIG! She had to drastically change her way of thinking to get there, something that many of us cannot do.....admit we are wrong.
Ok, disappointed you couldn’t find anything to talk about vs Oppenheimer. Trying to ponder why.... age ( I’m 70), theme of war....too close to right now... Help me out...
Ok now I need to watch Barbie when it streams.... You always make me think.
