Did ISIS attack Russia?/Worldwide water woes

IN THIS EPISODE:

ISIS claims it’s behind an attack near Moscow that killed at least 40 people just before a concert. This claim has yet to be confirmed, but what is ISIS up to these days?

Also, March 22nd is World Water Day, with plenty of challenges in hydrating the human race. Let’s check on some of the big water conflicts that could shape the future.

Today’s show was extra-long, so I broke out the final segment into a separate episode. That’s coming on Sunday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO…

me!

I’m 44 today. It feels good, and I’m incredibly grateful for this new chapter of my life. Many thanks to everyone who’s posted birthday greetings; they mean the world to me. I’m off to a quiet, delicious dinner tonight, then spending the weekend in California with friends. The occasion gave me the idea for a cheeky merch discount code to celebrate this milestone. You’ll get 15% off using this code at checkout:

POSTING TOMORROW: HOW TO WATCH ALEX GARLAND’S “CIVIL WAR”

Reviews were nearly unanimous: the new A24 dystopian action film Civil War is a hit. Kirsten Dunst stars as a photojournalist documenting a present-day war between American factions, culminating with a siege of Washington. It’s an interesting concept, given today’s political strife. It’s also got a huge plot hole — at least, I suspect it does. I’ll explain in my newest article that drops tomorrow for paid subscribers, Sunday for free subscribers. Read, comment, share… let me know what you think.

THE FUTURE OF THIS SUBSTACK

Thanks to everyone who responded to the survey I posted recently, asking how you use The Night Light. It’s become clear to me that Substack really is for written work, and that’s what I’m going to focus on here. Starting with my Civil War post I plan to focus this page much more on articles, essays and written pieces. Emailing you every time a podcast episode drops hasn’t been that fruitful compared to the many, many other ways you can hear the show.

So starting next week, my emails to you will be much more focused on original writing. I won’t be posting about every episode of the show, but I’m considering a weekly post summarizing the shows you may have missed. Focusing so hard on the show has eclipsed the fact that I actually enjoy writing! Unless I carve out space for it, that’ll keep falling by the wayside.

I’m grateful to you for bearing with me as I keep iterating and experimenting. More changes will come, I’m sure, and I’ll do my best to keep you up-to-speed.

Any questions or thoughts, feel free to get in touch. Enjoy your weekend… I definitely plan to!
